Gaming with Incontinence: 7 Tips for Staying Comfortable and Confident

My fellow gamers know me as “bearjam52” and know that incontinence can be a challenging condition for me. But, I know it doesn't have to prevent me from enjoying my favorite activities. I love to game and was worried about having an accident while I was playing. But I've learned that there are things I can do to manage my incontinence and still enjoy gaming.

One of the things that has helped me the most is finding online games that are designed for multiplayer or chat rooms. This way, I can still interact with other people and feel like I'm part of a community, even though I'm not physically there. I've also found that it's helpful to take breaks often and to stay hydrated. This helps me to avoid accidents and to stay comfortable while I'm playing.

Online gaming can be a great way to socialize, especially for people who are incontinent or homebound. It can provide a sense of community and belonging, which can be especially important for people who are isolated. If you are incontinent and looking for a way to connect with others, online gaming can be a great option. So, let me share my tips and tricks to help others who are living with incontinence find ways to enjoy their favorite activities.

Here are some tips and tricks to consider when gaming with incontinence:

❶  Consider the Game:

Some games are more conducive to incontinence than others. For example, games that require a lot of movement, like first-person shooters, strategy games, or puzzle games may have longer playtime and can be more challenging.

Instead, consider games that are less physically demanding or allow for adequate breaks. These games can be just as fun, and they're less likely to cause you any discomfort. Either way, the best tip is to understand the game rules and time efforts. Also, to make sure you have the right incontinence products that meet your needs.

❷   Take Breaks:

It's important to take breaks when gaming, even if you don't need to go to the bathroom. This will help you stay comfortable and prevent any accidents from happening.

Set a timer for every 30-45 minutes, and take a short break to stretch, walk around, or use the bathroom. This will help you stay refreshed and focused on your game.

❸    Avoid bladder irritants:

Food and drinks known to amplify overactive bladder symptoms include caffeine, alcohol, and citrus fruits. These irritants do not need to be cut out of your diet completely, but being aware of your food choices and planning accordingly can help decrease symptoms. (Mayo Clinic, 4.2023)

❹    Use incontinence products:

There are a variety of incontinence products available that can help you stay dry and comfortable while you're gaming. These products can range from disposable furniture pads to reusable undergarments.

Choose the product that's right for you, and make sure to wear it properly. This will help you avoid any accidents and keep you feeling confident while you're gaming.

❺    Gaming on the go:

Be prepared, it’s always great to keep a spare set of clothes and incontinence products nearby for that extra peace of mind.

❻    Find a comfortable gaming setup:

Your gaming setup can play a big role in how comfortable you are while you're gaming. Make sure you have a supportive chair and a desk that's the right height for you.

You may also want to consider using a footrest or a cushion to help you stay comfortable. This will help you avoid any pressure on your bladder and prevent any accidents from happening.

❼    Don't be afraid to ask for help:

If you're struggling to game with incontinence, don't be afraid to ask for help. There are many resources available to help you, including support groups, online forums, and healthcare professionals.

Don't let incontinence prevent you from enjoying your favorite activities. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can game comfortably and confidently.
